Don’t Waist Your Money, These Work Great !!!

23 Apr

CIMG1371Even though I’ve always been a girl who has enjoyed lots of make up I’ve never been one to wear foundation. I would only wear foundation when I was working as a make-up artist, almost like it was part of the uniform or something. Now as a woman of a certain age, (ehhhem), with red blotches and dark age spots, foundation has become a part of my daily make-up routine. I had been having a hard time getting that flawless look that I remember getting as a young make-up artist, (I’m sure not being young has a lot to do with it) I was sponging on all kinds of foundation, brightening, concealing, contouring, correcting, I just couldn’t get the coverage I wanted without getting a caked on look and I kinda felt like the sponge was soaking up all the make-up.

I remember way back in the day when I was in beauty school a bunch of us went out of town to a big hair show, (big “,” hair show not “big hair” show although it was the 80’s) and in the hotel our teacher and owner of the school could not find her make-up sponges anywhere and realised that she forgot to bring them, she went into a panic thinking she couldn’t put her foundation on. Then she, and all of us, laughed when she realised that she had put her foundation on for years with her fingers.

Today if you see a make-over being done on TV or in the store you will notice that all the make-up artists are using foundation brushes. So in my quest to make my face look like it did in my 20’s with foundation, (yeah I’m laughing too) I went to check out this foundation brush situation. I found a lot of foundation brushes from a Nordstrom brand brush for $22 all the way up to a Dior brush for $45, a Napoleon Perdis brush for $49, and a Yves Saint Laurent Polishing Brush, (not really sure what polishing is? Did I look polished in my 20’s? It looked like a foundation brush) for $55.

Luckily for me I didn’t buy a foundation brush that day. They all looked the same and I probably would have just bought the Nordstrom brand at $22 because it was the cheapest, but then a few days later….. While at the dollar store….. Guess what I saw…… You got it!!! Foundation brushes, so I bought three. Not having any expectations I applied my foundation with one of my new brushes. Worked great!!! My foundation went on evenly without looking to heavy or using up too much. After about I week I went to wash my dollar brushes totally expecting all of the bristles to fall out. Nope !!! Washed out beautifully, now I have a foundation brush, highlight brush, and contouring brush all for $3 ;o}

I love all the repurposed furniture that I find on Pinterest but refinishing furniture had always seemed like too hard of a project for me then I read one poster who said that she repainted without sanding and let's face it, sanding is a nightmare with the mess and the sore muscles, so when I read this I thought, "I'm in!!" Sooooo many things I want to make we'll see how far I get. This is the first one I'm trying……..CIMG1352 I found this armour/dresser type thing on Craig’s list for $50 and I was thinking of two different posts I found on Pinerest, one was a little night stand book shelf painted black with a black & white print paper lining the back, the other was a low boy dresser painted a glossy black and when you pulled the drawers out you saw hot pink. I loved both of these looks so I my original plan was to combine them but I couldn’t find the perfect black & white paper, one was too much white and one was too much black, (call me Goldie locks but I wanted it just right). I found a white and hot pink contact paper that I think will be really pretty, I’ll take it with me to the paint store to get a mach for in the drawers.
CIMG1356I know I said I wasn’t going to sand, but the finish on this seemed so shiny I thought I would just do a quick swipe with some sand paper. (ok yes that’s a nail buffer, I thought I had sand paper but I didn’t, Don’t judge me) CIMG1358Then I wiped it all down with white vinegar to get off any sanding dust or grease finger prints.
CIMG1357I removed the knobs that were on the dresser. I was going to either paint them black or find something else, not sure at this point.
CIMG1359Time for primer. I just used one of those cheap foam thingies.
CIMG1360I didn’t get my primer at a paint store so I’m not sure I got the best advise. I asked the guy if my primer should be tinted because I was using black paint and he told me no it would be fine. After one coat I was thinking he was wrong or it could have been the little sponge thingy. I switched to a little roller on the second coat and it did work better, but I had to go over a few spots a third time. I think if I paint anything black again I will have my primer tinted.
CIMG1367
To get my hot pink drawers I took a sample of my contact paper to Miller Paint and they told me they couldn’t do it while I wait, to do a real good match I would have to come back the next day to get my paint, but when I went to get my paint it didn’t match at all and they told me something about color that bright not being able to match exactly. (WHAT???) So I went to Sherwin Williams and they gave me perfect hot pink in about 2 minutes. (crises averted) I know from experience with a berry bathroom that any paint in the red family will be “low hide” So when I saw that the inside of the drawers were different wood colors I got kinda worried but on the second coat everything looked fine.

I decided to go to Hippo Hardware for some new knobs. I had gotten knobs there before so I knew they would be able to get me anything I wanted. Hippo Hardware is a great place for anything you are refurbishing from furniture to plumbing to electrical….. they rewired and cleaned an old french chandelier I have and it came out beautiful. You should really check them out if you have a chance http://www.HippoHardware.com
CIMG1364
I was a little bummed when I found out the the shelves didn’t come out, It would have been so much easier to do this in one piece, the botom one was the hardest of all, I had to take the sock bun out of my hair to fit my head in there :o/
CIMG1365
Getting resourceful again LOL ;o}
CIMG1366
I thought this part was going to go a lot smoother than it did, but then I realised that there was a protective covering on the blade…… so yeah you need to remove that. Once I took the protective covering off of the blade this was really easy except for I had some trouble in some of the corners but I don’t think you can really tell.

Is Your Nail Pollish Toxic ?

24 Jan

486435_4456248924826_1226487329_n
We all love having pretty nails but did you know that Nail polish frequently has three ingredients that are highly toxic, often called the “toxic trio.” In fact, even some salon brands labeled “non-toxic” had these three ingredients, even though they weren’t listed on the label. What?! Sneaky! And super annoying, given the care many of us take to keep toxins out of our bodies and off our fingernails. Tests found toluene in 10 of a dozen products labeled toluene-free, and also identified at least one member of the toxic trio in five of seven products labeled as “three-free.” The three dangerous chemicals found in nail polish include……

TOLUENE
This is an industrial solvent. It’s used to manufacture many things including paints, rubber, and other chemicals, as well as gasoline, airplane glue, and shoe polish. I’m pretty sure people wouldn’t smear this chemical all over their skin, but when you apply it to your finger and toenails as an ingredient in finger polish, that’s exactly what you’re doing! Your nails are part of your skin and very porous, so ingredients in beauty products can make their way into your system. According to Medscape, toluene has central nervous system effects. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and interacts with important neurotransmitters. Likewise, toluene affects other body systems as well, including your heart and lungs with symptoms ranging from acute (asphyxiation) to chronic (acute lung injury.) It also affects your liver, kidneys, and musculoskeletal systems, among others. Affects of toluene include…..

Contact dermatitis
Chemical burns
Skin necrosis
Inhibition of bone formation
Aplastic anemia
Hepatitis

FORMALDEHYDE
This colorless gas is a chemical compound commonly used as a preservative. When formaldehyde comes in contact with skin (which is what your nails consist of), it can cause contact dermatitis, blistering, and chemical burns. Exposure to low amounts of formaldehyde may lead to eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation. High levels can cause irregular heartbeat, pulmonary swelling, and even death. Not something you’d really want on or in your body, yet it is a common ingredient in nail polish.

DIBUTYL PHTHALATE (DBP)ibutyl phthalate
This ingredient, which also is called benzenedicarboxylic acid, dibutyl ester, and other names, is a common additive in fragrances, plastics, and solvents. According to the Environmental Work Group the European Union has banned this ingredient for use in cosmetics. Unfortunately, it is used in cosmetics in the United States. Among the many concerns with DBP in humans are…..

Reproductive toxicity
Nervous system toxicity
Developmental delays
Endocrine (hormone) disruption
Neurotoxicity
Lung irritant

As someone who’s had acrylic nails done in a salon on and off for 30 years and owned a salon for 10 years, this kinda makes me cringe but what has me even more concerned is the nail art trend for younger and younger girls. I know littles girls want to be just like mom but I see facebook posts all the time of moms and daughters as young as 3-4 getting mani/pedis together. This isn’t just happening on Toddlers & Tiaras people, it’s everybody.
Seriously, I would keep children and toddlers out of nail salons at all cost because you don’t control what they’re using, you don’t know about the ventilation, and there are people doing acrylics or gels or all the other types of applications. Minimizing any exposure for kids is important, because that’s when they’re most vulnerable to the harmful effects of some of these chemicals. So do you have to give up pretty nails and the mother daughter bonding experience forever??? No!!! There is an alternative, it is a totally non toxic, chemical free, made in the USA, Jamberry Nail Shield. Jamberry Nail Shields are a solid film covering that can be applied directly to the nail with no messy polish spills and no drying time so you can put them on right before bed and if little ones have to go potty in the middle…. no problem!!! This special material is both pressure and heat activated to create a watertight bond that won’t chip and will last 2 weeks on fingers and 6 weeks on toes. They have over 250 colors and designs to choose from with new designs all the time. I’ve been polish free and wearing Jamberry Nail Shields for 8 months now and loving them ;o}
You can take a look at all the colors and designs here…

The Plan: Eat more Vegetables. The Problem: Don’t like Vegetables.

14 Jan

If you watched the Golden Globe awards Like I did last night you saw Jodie Foster looking stunning in that strap-less dress, while with a little vintage SNL humor proclaiming, ” I’m 50″. Well let me tell you boys & girls, that’s not what 50 looks like at my house. I’ll never look as good as Jodie Foster, but now I want to make people say “wow she’s 50”. I’m already a few months into this decade so I’m running out of time. The plan….. eat more vegetables. The problem….. I don’t like vegetables. I try to eat a big salad every day to get some greens in, but I’m just not getting the variety I feel I need so I bought a Vita-mix thinking I could make vegetable soup. Lesson learned….. pureed onion is still raw onion. So today I ate a handful of spinach, mushrooms, baby carrots, and 1 whole raw onion…. kisses anyone?

I’d love to hear some better ideas on how to do this, but it has to be easy or I won’t do it.

10 Mistakes women make in middle age

8 Jan

Let’s not kid ourselves. Getting older sucks! Middle age is kinda the transition from young to old and for some of us is the first time we start to feel our youth leaving us. Some of us go into a panic others into denial, but most of us can agree that it sucks and can be confusing. Do the sexy clothes you wore in the past now seem just plain wrong? Will smoky eye makeup that looks great on 19-year-olds make you appear just plain crazy? Part of the problem is that aging often requires change, but most women don’t want to move to a frumpy town called Middle Age, where sensible shoes and boring clothes what you’re left with but, Hair, makeup, and clothing that made you look fantastic in your younger years, often won’t cut it as you grow older. Not Realizing You Need to Change and not doing anything at all is the biggest mistake women can make. If you want to age gracefully, you’ll need to make some changes.

1) Not Spending Enough on Your Clothes

Remember the good old days when you could grab a little frock off the clearance rack for $19.99 and throw it on without even putting on a slip and still look great? Unfortunately, those days are gone. Most of us need to invest in clothing that’s a bit more tailored and well constructed, think Lycra panels, butt-boosting jeans, and don’t forget foundation wear. It’s a challenge to find flattering clothes at any age, but it’s even harder in middle age. You’ll probably need to fork over more dough for body-squeezing shapers, proper bras, (more on that later) and well-fitted, well made clothes to do the trick.

2) Skipping Exercise

Don’t get me wrong, I know first hand that the aches and pains of middle age like the bum knee or the tricky back can leave you unable to do some of the things you used to do but, tempted to stop working out as you get older? (Or use it as another excuse not to start?) Sorry, that won’t cut it.You’ll have to exercise despite the aches and pains of middle. Exercising can actually relieve pain, and help fight off health problems in coming years, such as creeping weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, or dementia. If you can manage a marathon, great. If not, now is the time to check out the gym pool, start taking yoga, or fall in love with power walking. Penelope` (my dog) and I have recently taken up mall walking ;o}

3) Not Getting Enough Sleep

Remember when you could pull an all nighter and still make it to work, (or school) with a glowing complexion and a spring in your step. Well those days are gone. The fact is, you may have heard a “you look tired” comment even after a good night’s sleep. (It’s OK to grit your teeth on that one.)
While it may be tempting to shortchange sleep, particularly if you’re juggling parent and child-care duties, this may be one more thing you need to change. Fewer hours of sleep are more likely to show up on your face, true. But it’s also linked to a greater risk of diabetes and other health problems, which become even more important as you age.

4) Ignoring your Teeth

You may be focusing on your wrinkles or thinning hair, but don’t forget to smile at yourself in the mirror. We all know that yellowing teeth can make you appear older and we’ve all seen the many teeth whitening products, (and even tried a few) but it is about more than just looks. Dental health is closely linked with overall health, and gum disease—which gets more common as you age—has been associated with a higher risk of heart problems. So don’t skip those visits to the dentist and if in between dentists visits you’re worried that you’re not flossing well enough, try swishing a little coconut oil in your mouth for 10 – 15 minutes. Coconut oil is an antibacterial and antimicrobial so it will help keep your gums healthy. (Google oil pulling with coconut oil)

5) Overdoing Anti-Aging Efforts

This is a common mistake made by celebrities and real women alike. No one likes crow’s-feet or laugh lines, but a frozen Botox face or scary lip plumping or a big puffy cheek isn’t a great look either. First start from the inside by eating healthy fats from foods like avocados, nuts, and salmon and avoid inflammation causing sugar then try the right skin products such as those containing retinol for help diminishing fine lines and wrinkles and sunscreens for prevention. If you’re not happy with the result, then explore other alternatives—but don’t over do it and aim to look like a teen again. Remember, no wrinkles can be unrealistic and unnatural.

6) Thinking There Are Hair “Rules”

Do you have to cut your hair short or above the shoulders once you’re 50? No, because there aren’t really any hair “rules” for middle-aged women, (yeay!!! I was worried about this one) The fact is that your hair will probably get more gray and thin as you age, and the texture may get coarser as well. I know that I had to give up my blonde high lights when the grey came in and go to a brown that matched my natural color, so just choose a cut and color that you like, that’s flattering, and fits your life style, keeping in mind that it probably won’t be the cut and color that worked for you in your 20s and 30s.

7) Using the Wrong Makeup

The makeup colors and brands you’ve been wearing for years probably don’t reflect what’s best for your skin anymore.
The wrong concealers to cover up wrinkles and under-eye circles can make you seem even older, as will dark eyeliner under your eye. (I think I single handedly kept the black eyeliner industry in business in the 80’s) And resist the urge to slather on heavy-duty powders. For a more natural look, try using a magnifying mirror and having a “lighter touch” when applying. Keep your cosmetic bag current—replace foundations, powders, and concealers every 6 months to a year, and steer clear of dated makeup styles too.

8) Wearing the Wrong Bra

It’s inevitable—gravity has an impact on our bodies. But while you might be saggy where you were once perky, that doesn’t mean you have to stay that way. Many women continue to wear the same size and brand they’ve always worn, without considering that our bodies change as we age. Your band size may be smaller from muscle atrophy or bigger from weight gain and the style of the cup will need to be more supportive than it once was. The right bra can help lift and slim your body, so re-evaluate your undergarments and invest in some new pieces. Most large department stores and lingerie shops offer free bra-fitting services.

9) Settling for a Boring Sex Life

Our culture tends to sell the message that young equals sexy, and that when you get older you don’t want to do it, you can’t do it, you lose interest in it, bla, bla, bla, but you don’t have to buy into it. You should have the confidence and freedom to dress and feel as sexy as you want to, and explore your sexual needs as well. Women over 50 can have the best sex of their lives. For many women it’s the first time they are having sex with out worrying about “children”, either creating them or having them walk in the door.

10) Comparing Yourself to You in Your 20s

This is the most important one of all. Have your kids ever asked, “Who’s that pretty lady in your photo album?” You’re not alone. Few people look as attractive in middle age as they did in their younger years but guess what, you’re better. So take a walk down memory lane if you must, but don’t get depressed if you run into your younger self. Today you are rich with wisdom, new experiences, and new talents that you’re 20 something self could never compete with. Your personality and character have depth that your 20 something self could never imagine. And a little character on the face ain’t so bad either.

The goal is to look as good as you can now and be as healthy as you can now not recreate the body and face you had decades ago.

Is ” IT ” really that sexy ?

5 Jan

Is " IT " really that sexy ?.

Is ” IT ” really that sexy ?

4 Jan

My very first serious boy friend never liked to dance, we never ever went dancing, but every once in a while he would do this silly little dance move. He would put one foot in front of the other, ball up his fists like he was really getting ready to get down and do something, then with this shitty little grin he would subtly move his pelvis back and forth. It wasn’t cute. It wasn’t particularly funny, not in a haha way at least, but I could tell that he was really looking for a reaction. All the enthusiasm I could muster up was like, “um yeah there’s that silly move again”, but to be polite I would smile and giggle a little.

About a year into this relationship that was about as ridiculous as his little dance move, he’s doing it again and I’m smiling and giggling again only this time he blows up! ” I TRY TO BE SEXY FOR YOU AND ALL YOU DO IS LAUGH !!!” Ok really ??? :o/ First of all, you do this for a year and keep not getting the reaction you want….. AND YOU KEEP DOING IT ?!?!?! I think they say the first sign of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Second of all, REALLY ?!?!?! You slightly move the region in wich your parts reside and that’s supposed to be sexy ?!?!?!?!

I know men really thing “IT” is the be all end all, they worry about what size it is and what size other guys are, and don’t get me wrong, I appreciate what the guys can do with “IT” as much as the next girl, but to be honest if they’re good at what they do that’s enough for me. I really don’t need to ever even see it. I can think of many other parts on men that I think are sexy, in fact there’s not much that would come after “IT” except for maybe inner ear or balls or something (eeww balls) So girls. Is is just me. Do you think “IT” in its self is sexy?

Happy New Year !!!!!

3 Jan

Happy New Year everyone. I haven’t done the “gona lose weight” New Year resolution in many years now, but coming off of Christmas, Thanksgiving, and for me, My birthday, January 1st always seems like the time to get back on track, more so than just your typical 1st of the month or Monday. I feel a little more ambitious about setting exercise goals and stocking the house with healthy foods.

This year, Because of a Christmas request for African peanut soup for a friend of mine, I discovered I really enjoy curry. The soup I made for my friend was delicious but it had a stick of butter and lots of peanut butter so I set out to make a vegetable curry soup for myself. I started with 1 box of low sodium chicken stock, 3 chopped onions, (not sauteed in a stick of butter) 2 chopped sweet potatoes, a variety of chopped up greens, a can of black eyed-peas, (it is New years after all) and now this is the best part and a trick you can use to make lots of things thick and yummy without adding fat….. a can of white beans pureed until smooth. To this I added a little ground cumin, cayenne pepper, Himalayan pink salt, black pepper, and lots of curry. Put it all in the crock pot at night on low til the next morning.

Now I have a rich, thick, warm, spicy, satisfying soup… YUM!!! You know those cabbage soup diets??? Why would anybody eat that watery bland stuff when they can add some flavor and fiber and have something that tastes like real food that doesn’t make you feel like you’re dieting???
